Data and Analysis
The Ministry of Climate Change (MOCC) has implemented a licensing system in Pakistan for the import of genetically engineered (GE) commodities designated for food, feed and processing (FFP). In late 2024, the National Biosafety Committee (NBC) of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) approved all GE soybean events, enabling the resumption of imports of GE soybeans in February 2025.
Monsoon flooding since mid-August has inflicted significant damage on Pakistan’s agricultural sector. These floods have adversely impacted farmer’s held wheat stocks and are likely to disrupt the wheat planting schedule for the 2026/27 wheat crop.
The 2025/26 cotton area estimate is lowered to 1.85 million hectares primarily due to a decline in area in Sindh province. As a result of this decline, the production forecast is lowered to 4.8 million (480 lbs.) bales.
