The United Kingdom’s anticipated exit from the European Union (Brexit) will not change policy or trade in genetically engineered plants or animals in the short to medium term. The UK typically represents 10 to 15 percent of EU imports of soy, corn-related and other animal feed products likely to be derived from genetic engineering. Soybean meal is the largest import, mainly from Argentina, with the U.S. the major supplier of Distillers Dried Grains. Livestock industries remain protein-deficient and timely European Union approvals of new GE crops is key. Relevant for both GE plant and animal research, the UK will continue its curiosity-driven science base, and improve funding and access to public-private partnerships in applied science.

Governments’ support for inputs and rice production have lifted area harvested and yields, boosting production across much of the region. Marketing year (MY) 2024/25 area harvested for rice in Senegal, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Mali is projected up 1.7 percent year-over-year.
