Ukraine: Livestock and Products Semi-annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

Both cattle and swine inventory numbers hit all-time lows in 2019 and are expected to decline further in 2020. Ukraine’s livestock inventory has maintained a downward trend for two decades. Higher world market livestock prices inspired additional Ukrainian cattle exports in 2019. Beef exports were smaller than expected by remain strong at the expense of domestic consumption. The swine industry remained depressed due to African Swine Fever outbreaks and further investments were down. ASF outbreaks on industrial farms in late 2019 and 2020 led to another wave of pessimism in an already depressed industry. Pork imports in 2019 are down slightly due to increased domestic slaughter, but demand remains strong in 2020.
