Brazil is set for another record-breaking grain harvest. Post maintains its corn planted area forecast at 22.5 million hectares for MY 2022/2023 and corn production is forecast at 125.5 MMT for MY 2022/2023, up 8 percent from the estimated 116 MMT for MY 2021/2022.

The U.S. Census Bureau's bulk, intermediate, and consumer-oriented (BICO) export data tracks U.S. food and agricultural trade shipped directly to Poland.

Post increased the 2022/23 forecast for soybean planted area expansion to 43.3 million hectares (ha) and soybean production to 153 million metric tons (MMT). This season sowing began optimistically, with most soybeans planted on time compared to last year. However, in the southern part of the country including Rio Grande do Sul and Parana, rains will be needed in January because if continues to be dry, the crop will be negatively impacted.

After being adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Brazil’s gross domestic product (GDP) registered two years of consecutive growth, 4.6 percent in 2021 and an estimated 3 percent by the end of 2022.

Post forecasts 2022/23 planted cotton area at 1.66 million hectares (ha), with production at 13.3 million bales (2.89 million metric tons, MMT), about a 13 percent increase from the 2021/22 estimated production of 11.52 million bales (2.5 MMT). Cotton area is forecast to rise because of favorable weather leading to timely first-season soybean planting and improved yields, as well as a favorable outlook for prices and profitability.

On October 2022, Brazil adopted the Front of Panel Nutritional Label, which has been under discussion since 2014. The two major government regulators for agricultural goods, the National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA) and the Ministry of Agriculture Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), have also concluded the great majority of the task of reviewing and consolidating the comprehensive set of regulations related to technical and administrative procedures; however, there are still ongoing public consultations, and those are expected to be concluded in 2023.

Poland applies European Union (EU) regulatory requirements for all food of animal- and plant-origin. Although the EU has harmonized export certificate requirements for most products, Poland maintains national-level oversight for products still not harmonized under the EU. Poland’s competent authorities can be consulted on a case-by-case basis regarding requirements for non-EU harmonized products. The EU requires that all requisite products be accompanied by sanitary and/or phytosanitary certificates at the port of entry.

Poland is a European Union (EU) Member State and applies all EU regulations pertaining to imports of food and feed products. U.S. food and feed suppliers to Poland should verify with local importers and appropriate U.S. regulatory agencies regarding the most current local requirements prior to shipment.

Poland opposes the use of genetic engineering in agriculture. Although the current regulatory framework technically allows genetically engineered (GE) seeds to enter commerce, the law stipulates they cannot be planted.

Brazil is the second-largest producer of biotech crops in the world with 105 events approved. For the 2022/2023 crop season, FAS Brasilia forecasts a 65 million hectares planted with GE traits. Adoption rates for soybeans and cotton reached 99 percent and 95 percent for corn. Continued use of biotechnology seeds has been a major contributor to yield growth in Brazil since its adoption.
