Taiwan exported $511 million of agricultural & related products to the U.S. in 1st Half 2022 out of $ 2.8 billion of total exports. Despite total exports declining by 7 percent year-on-year, exports to the U.S. increased 14 percent.
Taiwan is going through an unprecedented phase of high-end wine consumption growth, placing the United States as the second largest foreign supplier by value. Being the U.S. wine’s sixth largest valuable Asian market, Taiwan achieved its outsized impact for purchasing high-end U.S. wine.
In 2021, Taiwan production of forage crops accounted for 45 percent of demand. Taiwan imports approximately 300,000 tons of forage products annually to supplement domestic production, which is constrained by limited farmland and suitable climate conditions.
Taiwan is the third largest export market for U.S. peaches and nectarines and the fifth largest export market for U.S. cherries. In MY 2021/22, Taiwan imported 16,330 MT of fresh peaches/ nectarines and 13,851 MT of fresh cherries. Retail food outlets in Taiwan are comprised of convenience stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets, which generated $32.4 billion worth of sales in 2021, a 2.2 percent growth from 2020. The United States continues to be the leading supplier of consumer-oriented food and agricultural products to Taiwan with popular products such as beef and fresh fruit taking over 30 percent of total market share.
In 2021, the total value of U.S. agricultural and related products exported to Taiwan was $3.94 billion, an increase of 18 percent compared to the previous year. Taiwan moved up two places to rank as the 6th largest market for U.S. agricultural exports in 2021. This was the second highest year on record behind 2018’s $4.08 billion. Products in the consumer oriented category continue to play an increasingly important role, with beef and dairy products hitting new highs year after year.
On April 1, 2022, Taiwan notified the United States that it had successfully completed an audit inspection of the U.S. system for eggs and egg products. As of May 30, 2022, the United States has full market access to Taiwan for all eggs and egg products.
In 2021, Taiwan's whiskey imports reached $553 million, up 19 percent compared to 2020. The United States ranks as the third-largest supplier with a two-percent market share,
Effective April 18, 2022, Taiwan temporarily modified its restrictions on imports of poultry and poultry products from the United States and Canada impacted by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The modification allows imports of poultry and poultry products from banned U.S. states if the date of slaughter is 14 days or more before the applicable HPAI ban began.
On April 19, 2022, Taiwan notified the WTO of updates to its pesticide residue limits for foods and animal products. Attached to this report are tables containing the new or revised standards for 58 new chemical/crop combinations and 31 new chemical/animal combinations.

MY2022/23 wheat production is forecast flat at 6,000 MT, unchanged from the previous two MYs. Australia recovered its market share thanks to drought recovery but the United States remains the chief supplier with 66 percent market share.
