Poland: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Strikes Commercial Flocks in Poland

On January 2, 2020, Poland’s Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) announced that on December 31, 2019, three cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were confirmed on commercial turkey farms in southeastern Poland’s Lublin Province. According to media reports, over 42,000 turkeys from the three Lublin locations will be euthanized. On December 31, 2019, the CVO informed the European Commission about the occurrence of HPAI through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS). Also, on January 3, 2019, the CVO announced another HPAI case in the western Polish province of Wielkopolska on a commercial layer farm. Although Poland is the European Union's (EU) largest poultry producer, it is not eligible to export poultry meat to the United States.
