Italy: Italian Wine Overview 2017

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

According to the latest data from the Italian Enologists Association (Assoenologi), Italy produced 3.9 billion liters of wine in 2017, the lowest campaign since 1947 (3.6 billion liters) and 28 percent down from 2016 (5.4 billion liters) due to severe frosts in April and the summer drought. However, Italy will retain the title of world's largest wine producer, as chief rivals France and Spain have also been affected by adverse weather conditions. In 2016, Italy’s wine exports remained stable at 2 billion liters valued at $6.2 billion, mainly to the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.
