Ecuador: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

On June 1, 2017, Ecuador’s National Assembly approved the “Organic Law on Agrobiodiversity, Seeds and Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture.” This law side-stepped the constitutional ban on the cultivation of genetically engineered (GE) crops by permitting GE crop cultivation for research purposes. Anti-GMO groups subsequently brought the case to Ecuador’s highest court. To date, no ruling has been made.
