China: Fresh Oyster Market Overview

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)   |   CH2022-0019

Fresh oysters are considered a special treat in China, part of a niche luxury market mainly in coastal cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, and Beijing. Although demand for shellfish in China is strong, U.S. oyster importers face a number of challenges including high death rates, slow clearance at ports due to COVID-19 related controls, international competition, and price competitive domestic products. However, U.S. oyster exports to China increased over 18 percent from January to November 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, with trade value rising to $238,670 from $233,203 in the previous year.
