South African production of oranges and lemons is projected to decrease in MY 2022/23 due to stagnated production area and a return to normal yield.

FAS Lima forecasts Peruvian mandarin/tangerine production at 550,000 metric tons (MT), with exports expected to reach 222,000 MT for marketing year (MY) 2022/23 (March 2023 to February 2024).

Citrus production in MY 2022/23 decreased for all citrus fruits except tangerines due to freezing weather conditions reaching -7 C during the beginning of the orange blossoming period in March 2022.

Post has adjusted production numbers for tangerines/mandarins and oranges based on the latest data obtained from the Moroccan citrus industry. MY 2022/23 export figures are revised based on trade to date data.

In MY 2022/23, European Union (EU) citrus production is projected to amount to 10.4 million metric tons (MMT), 10 percent down from the previous season, especially impacting oranges and lemons, and slightly lower than previous estimations.

Assuming normal growing conditions for open-field and shade house cultivation, as well continued greenhouse technology use, Post forecasts Mexico’s 2023 fresh tomato production at 3.87 million metric tons (MMT), a marginal increase over the Government of Mexico’s (GOM) official 2022 production estimate of 3.8 MMT.

In MY 2022/23, FAS Santiago estimates lemon production will increase by 26.4 percent and total 172,000 MT (metric tons) due to favorable climatic conditions. Lemon exports will increase by 33.9 percent and reach 75,000 MT due to higher productions and a decrease in freight costs.
