FAS/Cairo (Post) forecasts Egypt’s soybean imports in marketing year (MY) 2024/25 (October – September) to increase by 14.8 percent from the previous marketing year, due to an influx of foreign currency into Egyptian banks.

Taiwan’s soybean imports are forecast at 2.65 MMT for MY2023/2024 and MY2024/2025, a slight recovery from the previous MY. Weakness in feed demand due to animal diseases was one of the causes for lower soybean imports and reduced crush for MY 2022/2023.

Tunisian MY 2024/25 soybean imports are expected to reach 555,000 MT, compared to 550,000 MT in MY 2023/24 as demand for animal feed increases slightly.

Egyptian traders and crushers continue to demand sustainability and quality of supply, both of which are key features of U.S.-origin soybean. This demand produced another record year for U.S.-origin soybean exports to Egypt with 4.07 MMT in exports, was by far Egypt’s largest supplier of soybeans in marketing year 2021/22.

Taiwan’s soybean imports are forecast at 2.65 MMT for MY2022/2023 and MY2023/2024. In MY 2021/2022, Taiwan imports of soybeans reached a record high of $1.74 billion. To stabilize commodity prices and reduce inflationary pressure for consumers, since February 2022 Taiwan has waived business taxes on imported soybeans, currently set to expire on June 30, 2023.

Tunisian MY 2023/24 soybean imports are expected to reach 540,000 MT, compared to 510,000 MT in MY 2022/23. Tunisian olive oil exports are forecast to reach 200,000 MT in MY 2023/24, compared to 155,000 MT in MY 2022/23.

Marketing year 2020/21 was another record year for U.S.-origin soybean exports to Egypt. The United States, with 2.53 MMT in exports, was Egypt’s largest supplier of soybeans. Egypt’s soybean imports in marketing year (MY) 2022/23 (October-September) are forecast at 4.0 million metric tons (MMT), up 400,000 MT from the MY 2021/22 estimate.

Taiwan’s soybean imports are projected to reach 2.63 and 2.65 MMT in MY2021/22 and MY 2022/23. Soybean import demand will be buoyed by steady feed demand as well as exports and demand for soybean oil. In MY 2020/21, Taiwan’s COVID-19 control restrictions in Q2-Q3 had some negative impact on demand from the HRI sector, especially for soybean oil and palm oil which are favored in commercial use.
