The United States exports bone-in chicken meat to South Africa under a Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) arrangement, which was set at 71,290 tons to be imported quarterly for the April 2021 - March 2022 quota year. The US bone-in chicken quota for the year 2021/2022 was filled at 84 percent, a 10 percent drop from the previous quota year.

Mexico: Tomatoes and Products Annual

Assuming normal conditions for open-field cultivation and continued growth in the sector’s use of greenhouse and shade technologies, Mexico’s fresh tomato production for October-September marketing year (MY) 2022/23 is projected to match the official production estimate for MY 2021/22 of 3.7 million metric tons (MMT). Despite abnormally dry conditions in some areas, no major production shortfalls due to weather are present at this time.

Malaysia: Cotton and Products Annual

Post forecasts consumption of cotton in the Malaysian textile industry at 290,000 bales in marketing year (MY) 2022/23, a 3.3 percent drop from the previous year post’s estimate. The expected reduction is based on textile companies shifting their operation to other South-East Asian countries as the cost of labor increased in Malaysia with the revision of new minimum wages on April 1, 2022.

India: Biofuels Annual

India’s average ethanol blending rate with petroleum for calendar year 2022 is estimated at 9.3 percent. India’s position as a structural surplus sugar producer and gradual utilization of alternative feedstocks will drive supply, while a 35 percent increase in offtakes by parastatal oil marketing companies for ethanol blending will drive demand.

Thailand: Biofuels Annual

Thailand doubled its target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in COP26. The Thai government has yet to finalize the new biofuel consumption targets. Biofuel consumption in 2021 and 2022 is still far below current targets due to the prolonged outbreak of COVID-19 and the slow economic recovery after the pandemic caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The following changes have been made to the 2022 FAIRS report: 1) Section II – Labeling. Effective December 1, 2023, food containing hydrogenated oils must be labeled. 2) Section III – Packaging. Glass and plastic bottles will be subject to additional levies. 3) Section VI – Other Requirements, Regulations, and Registration Measures.

Chile: Salmon Overview

Salmon is Chile’s largest food and agricultural export and the second largest total export sector after copper. In 2021, exports totaled 615 thousand metric tons worth $4.8 billion. Production is growing rapidly; Chilean salmon production grew an average of 10.4 percent between 2016 and 2020 and totaled 1.1 million metric tons (MMT) in 2020.

Tanzania: Coffee Annual

MY 2022/23 coffee production is expected to decrease 4 percent to 1.15 million bags due to high fertilizer prices and dry conditions at the beginning of the marketing year. Post forecasts MY 2022/23 exports will decline 4 percent to 1.05 million bags due to lower exportable supplies.

Japan: Japan to Require Allergy Labeling for Walnuts

Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) will add walnuts to list of allergens that product manufacturers and importers must include on the label of packaged products containing walnuts. Currently, CAA strongly recommends including walnuts on the label, but does not require their inclusion.
On May 17, 2022, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued Notification F. No. STD/SP-20/T (Recycled Plastics-N) notifying amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations (2018). The notification was published in the Gazette of India – Extraordinary (official gazette) on May 18, 2022, and uploaded to the FSSAI website on May 24, 2022.
