Grape production in Peru is forecast to reach 766,000 metric tons (MT) in marketing year (MY) 2022/2023, an increase of seven percent compared to the previous year. Domestic consumption of fresh grapes is forecast at 186,000 MT in MY 2022/2023, a six percent increase from MY 2021/22. Peruvian grape exports are forecast to reach a record of 586,000 MT in MY 2022/2023, eight percent higher than the previous year. The United States will continue to be the lead export market.
Peru is an internationally recognized gastronomic hub with opportunities for imported complementary food products. Health restrictions eased during 2021 but the foodservice sector has yet to recover pandemic-related losses. The industry will also continue to make adjustments due to changes in consumer behavior.
Peru´s food retail sector is projected to grow 5.3 percent in 2022, reaching $26.3 billion. Growth is expected to be driven by better performance of the modern channel, especially in the development of new store formats and an aggressive discounting campaign to encourage sales.
For calendar year (CY) 2022, Post forecasts pulses area harvested will increase by 3 percent and production will total 295,000 metric tons (MT) as a response to high international prices and shorter supply. Post estimates CY 2022 pulse imports to decrease to 40,000 MT due to higher domestic production, higher pulse prices, existing stocks, higher freight costs, and a strong U.S. dollar.
Throughout mid 2021 to early 2022, FAS Lima conducted twelve activities under the "Eat More Pulses" campaign to promote consumption of pulses nationwide. The goal of the campaign is to expand the Peruvian market for pulses.
Coffee production in MY 2022/2023 is forecast at 4.03 million 60-kilogram bags, an increase of two percent from the previous year. Peru’s coffee exports in MY 2022/2023 are forecast at 3.95 million 60-kilogram bags, a slight increase from the previous year.
Rice production in Senegal, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Mali is forecast at 8.02 million metric tons (MMT) in MY 2022/23 on average weather, improved irrigation, and enhanced stability in production areas. The 15 percent jump from MY 2021/22 follows a growing season that was plagued by poor weather, militant activity and instability in Mali, and irrigation issues and pest prevalence in Senegal.
Sugar cane production in MY 2023 is forecast at 11 MMT while cane sugar production if forecast to reach 1.32 MMT. Higher sugar prices are expected to encourage higher sugar output. The United States remains the main market for Peruvian sugar exports under the TRQ program.
Peru’s food processing industry is a dynamic sector of the national economy. The food industry in Peru accounts for almost 27 percent of the industrial gross domestic product. The sector rebounded from a slight drop in 2020, achieving a 9.8 percent growth in 2021. U.S.-origin food processing ingredient exports to Peru reached $196 million in 2021.
Peruvian wheat production in MY 2022/2023 is forecast at 220,000 MT. Wheat imports in MY 2022/2023 are forecast at 2.25 MMT. Corn production in MY 2022/2023 is forecast at 1.7 MMT.
Fishmeal exports reached a surprising 1.2 million metric tons (MMT) in MY 2021, the highest amount in ten years. However, production and exports are forecast to return to more normal levels at 910,000 and 896,000 metric tons, respectively.
