Morocco: Varietal Approval Requirement on Imported Planting Seeds

This report contains an unofficial translation of Order No. 966-93 on the conditions for import and marketing of seeds to be cultivated in Morocco. Varieties must be registered in an official catalog or on provisional lists in order to be marketed. New varieties of species for which there is not yet a list or catalog may only be imported for preliminary tests or trials and may not be marketed. Morocco’s imports of planting seeds are $125 million, including $5 million from the United States. Leading planting seed imports are tomato ($30 million), potato ($25 million), sugar beet ($15 million), onion ($10 million), and corn ($10 million). Other significant categories include melon, broad bean, watermelon, pea, carrot, common wheat, alfalfa, durum wheat, bean, and rice ($>1 million). Imports from the United States are led by carrot ($2 million), alfalfa ($1 million), and onion ($1 million).
