Malaysia: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)   |   MY2022-0014

Malaysia’s Biosafety Act 2007 and Biosecurity Regulations are currently under review by the Department of Biosafety. As of September 2022, 57 genetically engineered (GE) products have been approved for import, an increase of 14 percent from 2021. Malaysia does not currently have any domestic production of plant biotechnology. However, the country continues to expand the number of approved GE products for commercial use. The Malaysian Ministry of Health established mandatory GE labeling guidelines in 2013, but, they have yet to be enforced. On September 12, 2022, Malaysia launched the National Biotechnology Policy 2.0 which focuses on agriculture, food security, healthcare, and wellbeing with no mention of Genetic Modification (GM) or GE policies or initiatives.
