Japan: Labeling Discussion Continues for Genome-Edited Foods

On June 20, 2019, per the request of the Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA), the Consumer Committee in the Cabinet Office of Japan held its second public meeting to discuss the possible creation of a labeling system for foods derived from genome editing technology. While Japan’s Consumer Committee did not indicate a specific position for the labeling of genome-edited foods, some members expressed views that a mandatory labeling system would not be appropriate.
