India: Livestock and Products Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

Assuming a healthy calf-crop (improving reproductive rate) and steep rise in beginning cattle stock, India’s calendar year (CY) 2021 cattle (Bos taurus or Bos indicus) and water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) herd size will increase to 305.5 million heads. Likewise, Indian water buffalo meat (carabeef) exports in out-year (CY 2021) will recover to 1.2 million metric tons (MMT), some 14.3 percent above the current year’s estimate, assuming some curbed demand and improvement in the domestic supply chain. Despite an increase, the out-year export forecast is still below its five-year average of 1.6 MMT. Note: Carabeef and beef production and trade are reported in carcass weight equivalent (CWE).
