India: Cotton and Products Update

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

Post estimates cotton production at 28.9 million 480-lb bales in marketing year (MY) 2020/21 on an area of 12.9 million hectares. The pace of sowing is 3 percent higher than last year, and was completed well ahead of time, barring a few southern states. While government agencies have been able to offload stocks at a fast pace, a significant portion of unsold stocks remains in the market. Exports of cotton and cotton products are improving as mill operations return to normalcy. Over the past few weeks, the Government of India abolished a number of textile boards including the Cotton Advisory Board, which is responsible for developing the country’s cotton supply and demand estimates.
